Turn layover time into me time. Find productive, peaceful and fun ways to enjoy your layover at ONT, from art installations to local dining and relaxation spots.
Do you avoid layovers because they’re usually synonymous with endurance tests? It’s part of why travel hubs like Ontario International Airport (ONT) offer so many nonstop flights, but also why our team has worked so hard to make ONT a layover you might — dare we say — even look forward to.
Okay, maybe we’re getting ahead of ourselves. But, the truth is that we’ve tried to cultivate an environment that brings more So Cal vibes and less of the feeling that you’re just cargo being shuttled from place to place. Because doesn’t everyone deserve a small moment of calm tucked into a travel day? A chance to relax, reset or maybe even discover something unexpected, like vending machine ramen or a short story printed on what looks like a comically long receipt.
So take a breath, settle in and get ready to rethink your layovers.
Layover Length Guide
- 20 minutes: Walk it out
- 30-45 minutes: Recharge, grab a quick bite
- 1-2 hours: Explore art/culture, shop, dine leisurely
- 2+: All of the above plus relaxation and discovery
Stretch Your Legs and Stay Active
Got 20 minutes? Reset your body before the next flight.
Air travel can make anyone feel stiff, so use your layover to walk the terminals, explore art installations or enjoy a leisurely self-guided terminal loop. ONT’s compact size makes it easy to get steps in without stress or long treks.
You could even take this time to read up on our various travel tips and build a little more efficiency or comfort into your next flight.
Recharge Yourself (and Your Devices)
Got 30–45 minutes? Plug in, get comfortable and exhale.
ONT is filled with plentiful charging stations and comfy seating options, so there’s no need for a treasure hunt for outlets or playing musical chairs at the terminal. Connect to the free high-speed Wi-Fi, stretch out, hydrate or enjoy a few quiet minutes before your next flight.
If your personal battery needs a boost, grab a beverage, meditate for a moment near the windows or try a quick mindfulness break. ONT’s frequent visitors typically describe our environment as less frantic than larger airports, so it’s easier to reclaim your calm.
Yelp reviewer Kath V. sums it up like this: “I feel at ease and comfortable when flying here.”
Pro Tip: The east end of Terminal 4, near the Aspire Lounge, has comfortable seating pods that are great for getting some peace and quiet.
Explore ONT’s Art and Culture Scene
Got 1 hour? Go museum-hopping without ever leaving the terminal.
We’ve become a low-key cultural hub thanks to Art @ ONT and our satellite installation of the California Science Center. Work from local artists is showcased across both terminals, along with display cases doubling as mini museums, featuring historical aviation items and regional artifacts that offer a fun peek into the area’s past. If you want to stoke your curiosity in a fully immersive exhibit space, you can take a “deep dive” with underwater footage from California’s incredible coastline, available at the California Science Center exhibit inside Terminal 4!
If you or the kids love to read, don’t miss our Short Story Dispensers near the security screening areas in both terminals. Select a genre or story length, and the machine prints a short story on receipt-style paper for free. Kids love the surprise factor, grown-ups love the novelty and everyone leaves with a tiny literary souvenir.
And if you’re a plane watcher, ONT’s wide windows and easy sightlines make it an ideal place to watch arrivals and departures glide past. Or just enjoy that gorgeous mountain view.
Grab a Bite or Browse the Shops
Got 1-2 hours? Refuel with local flavors or shop fun finds.
ONT’s shopping and dining scene includes everything from easy grab-and-go options to sit-down spots where you can savor something local. Craving a drink? ONT is stocked with the best airport bars for every kind of traveler, and Brewery X is a go-to for anyone who wants to sip and snack while keeping an eye on the game.
More into small bites, or just looking for something cool? Try an ONT vending machine scavenger hunt! From Pokémon cards to Skittles Remix to steaming hot ramen, you’ll find surprises that feel delightfully random or light up your taste buds.
If your belly’s already full, you can hit the shops to pick up a last-minute gift, forgotten essentials or something local to bring home. The relaxed pace at ONT means fewer crowds and no pressure to rush.
Relax and Decompress
Got more than 2 hours? Make it yours.
Find a peaceful window seat, sip something warm, finally listen to that podcast or simply enjoy the quiet movements of an airport that doesn’t overwhelm. ONT’s layout keeps foot traffic manageable, so it’s easier to unwind without being swept up in a bustling crowd. There’s plenty to keep you occupied, and you can purchase a day pass to ONT’s Aspire lounges for some added R&R.
If it’s your lucky day, you might even encounter one of ONT’s Decade of Local Control Passenger Pop-Ups, hosted monthly January through October of 2026. They’re designed to surprise and delight travelers with treats, giveaways and local charm. Families often describe these pop-ups as “little lifesavers disguised as fun.”
Turn Layover Time into Your Time
At ONT, a layover can be a reset. A breather. A surprise pocket of discovery where you can enjoy a foot-long short story with a bowl of ramen, watch a leopard shark swim through a forest of kelp, shake paws with an airport therapy dog or simply catch up on whatever you need to (be it sleep or emails).
